Privacy policy
Last updated October 25, 2026.
This policy explains what Fits Like A Mitten collects when you visit this website, join our email list or send a postcard, what we do with it, and the choices you have. We sell T-shirts and publish the Journal. We never sell or rent our email list.
What we collect
Your email address, when you give it to us. The signup forms on this site (the homepage, the story vote, the forms inside and below Journal stories) ask only for an email address.
Which form you used. We save a few labels with your email so we know what you signed up for: for example that you want to hear when the founding drop opens, which design you voted for in “Pick the next story,” or the topic of the story you were reading when you signed up.
Postcards you send. When you send a digital postcard, we use your friend’s email address, your name, your note and, if you add it, your own email address (so your friend can reply) to send that one card. Your friend isn’t added to any list, and we don’t keep the card or the note after it’s sent. To stop abuse, we keep scrambled (hashed) versions of your IP address and your friend’s address for up to a day, so we can limit how many cards one person sends.
How you use the site. Depending on your privacy choices (below), our analytics and advertising tools record the pages you visit, the site that sent you here, your device and browser type, your approximate location (city or region, from your IP address), and actions such as starting or finishing a signup, voting, sending a postcard, sharing a story, reading to the end of a story, searching the site and following links within it. Your email address is never sent to these tools, except to Klaviyo, which already has it if you’ve signed up.
Basic visit information. Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested) to keep the site running and secure.
Analytics, advertising and cookies
We use these tools to learn which stories people read and to show our ads to people who have visited:
- Plausible Analytics counts visits without cookies and without collecting personal information, so it runs for every visitor. It shows us totals, such as how many people read a story. (Plausible’s data policy)
- Google Analytics uses cookies to measure visits and the actions listed above. We’ve turned on Google signals, so if you’re signed in to Google and allow ad personalization there, Google may connect this activity to your Google account. Google also uses this data to measure and target ads. (Google’s privacy policy; how Google uses information from sites that use its services; Google’s browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics)
- The Meta Pixel tells Meta (Facebook and Instagram) when you visit, read a story, sign up or take the other actions listed above, so we can measure our ads and show them to people who’ve been here. Meta may also receive the same events from its own servers, which makes the measurement more reliable. (Meta’s privacy policy)
- Klaviyo, which runs our email list, uses a cookie to recognize you when you come back if you’re a subscriber, so we can see which stories you read and send you more of what you like. (Klaviyo’s privacy notice)
We may also run ads on Google. If we do, Google’s advertising tools use the same Google cookies and follow the same choices.
A few other things are kept in your browser’s storage, on your own device: your privacy choices; a note that you signed up through a form inside a story, so we stop showing you that form; a note, for a few minutes after you sign up, so the signup is counted only once; and a short-lived copy (a few minutes to a day) of the public weather and space-weather data described below, so pages load faster. You can clear all of these at any time in your browser settings.
Your privacy choices
Every page has a Your privacy choices link at the bottom. It lets you turn analytics and advertising on or off separately, and your choice is saved in your browser.
In the United States and most other countries, analytics and advertising are on until you turn them off. Letting Meta and Google show our ads to past visitors can count as “selling” or “sharing” personal information under some US state privacy laws. Turning off advertising opts you out. We also honor Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends that signal, advertising stays off.
In the European Union, the UK and Switzerland, nothing but Plausible runs until you say yes in the banner you see on your first visit.
Live weather and northern lights data
The homepage’s weather line and our Northern Lights Tonight page show live public data. To get it, your browser contacts NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center and the National Weather Service directly. Like any website you visit, they receive your IP address and basic browser information when it does. We don’t send them anything about you, and they don’t send us anything about you. Their own privacy policies are at noaa.gov and weather.gov.
How we use it
We use your email address to send you new Journal stories and news about Fits Like A Mitten, including when the founding drop opens. We use the labels described above to send you what you asked for, and we may use them, along with the stories you read, to send you stories on topics you’ve shown interest in.
We use analytics to see which stories people read and what to write next, and advertising tools to measure our ads and show them to people who’ve visited.
Who we share it with
We use Klaviyo to store our email list and send our emails, Brevo to deliver postcards and the site’s own emails, and a web hosting company to run this website. They process your information on our behalf and only to provide those services. Google, Meta and Plausible receive the information described under “Analytics, advertising and cookies,” according to your privacy choices and their own policies. We’ll also disclose information if the law requires it.
When we open our store, purchases will be handled by our online store provider and its payment processors, and this policy will be updated to cover orders.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address while you’re subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep a record of that so we don’t email you again. You can ask us to delete your information completely at any time.
Google Analytics keeps visit data for 14 months. Plausible keeps only totals that can’t identify you. We don’t keep postcards after they’re sent; Brevo keeps a delivery record for a limited time under its own policy.
Unsubscribing and your information
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link. To see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, email us at hello@fitslikeamitten.com and we’ll respond within 30 days.
Children
This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us their email address, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here with a new date. If the change is significant, we’ll tell subscribers by email.
