Fits Like A Mitten

Our story By people from here. For anyone who loves it.

Over the years, it’s become easy to look at northern Michigan and see only the postcards — the July fudge lines, the boat slips, the glossy resort brochures. And look, the visitors are a big part of the story, and plenty of them love these woods and waters as much as anyone. We’re glad they’re here.

But Up North isn’t just a summer vacation. It’s home. It’s the people who live here when the bays freeze solid, who plow the drifts at 5 a.m., coach Little League, keep the diner griddles hot in February and show up with a tow strap when a neighbor’s in a ditch.

Fits Like A Mitten starts right there: with the way people actually live up here. Our founder, Jim Malec, was born in Petoskey and grew up outside Harbor Springs. Growing up around here, you learn early on that people build things with their hands, and they build them to last for the folks next door. We’re making clothes and telling stories in that exact same spirit.

The name comes from the only map that matters: the one permanently attached to your wrist. Ask anyone from here where they live, and they won’t reach for their phone — they’ll hold up their right hand and tap a knuckle.

We’re starting simple: one heavyweight tee, two original designs, sized XS to 3XL. When you put the word “fits” on the collar of a shirt, you don’t get to sell a cheap, boxy souvenir that shrinks into a crop top after two cycles in the wash. We measure every cut, wash it, wear it and publish the honest measurements so you know what you’re actually pulling out of the box. If it doesn’t earn the name, it doesn’t ship.

Then there’s the Journal. We write about this place the way folks here talk about it over a porch beer — no tourist-board fluff, no recycled roadside myths. Just real stories, checked right down to the primary sources and the bedrock, from shipwrecks you can see from shore to the unending argument over where Up North actually starts.

If that sounds like home, join the list. You’ll be the first to know when the founding drop is ready to roll.
